5 ways my blog has helped me get out of debt

Want to save for a holiday, handbag or even get out of debt? Why not start a blog?

12 months ago I definitely wasn’t a Professional Babe. I was in debt, I was overweight and my mindset was in a really toxic place. I cover this all in my letter from the editor.

I’d look at my Instagram and see people doing well business wise and was instantly envious. I want that to be me. That’s all that was rolling around my head. I’d recently been hospitalised from glandular fever and the debt I was incurring from being sick and taking 3 months off work was piling up.

I had a Pilates DVD and a digital product that wasn’t selling as well as I’d like. I wanted to work with brands and I knew I had a lot to offer them. The issue is I had trouble conveying my message and I felt like a fake.

I knew I needed to get my personal shit together and I knew if I really worked on my blog, that it would work for me.

To cut a long story short, I saw someone who I studied nutrition with, advertise a course she was running. It was about blogging and how she can help you make a profit from your blog. Intrigued, I clicked the link and saw she was making $20,000.00 from her blog. And I knew her!!!

I took a leap of faith and enrolled in her profit course and the rest is history.

Although I’m not making anywhere near that in monthly sales, I am estimating that will be my projected income for Professional Babe in 2016.

People are always amazed that you can make money online, so I thought I’d share the ways my blog has helped me to get out of debt:

Publications are noticing and I’m getting paid writing work

Although I’ve been published before, it used to pay nothing. I chased work so hard and was so keen to be in the media and accept opportunities, I’d stupidly give away my expertise for free. Now, however, that’s changed. I have a regular writing contract with a company contacting ME to be an expert for them! They were a fan of my blog and wanted me and were willing to pay me for it. I regularly contribute for SheSaid – you can find my articles here.

I sell products online

My blog has helped me connect with an audience and a portion of them buying my digital products. Part of my debt is paid off by these sales and I sell a lot more online than I do in my own Pilates studio. There have been times when sales are fantastic and other times where I might sell 3 DVD’s a week. However, the bottom line means sales easily cover a large chunk of my debt each month.

Brands notice me and want to work with me

I now approach my blog like a business, a professional one at that! Brands are starting to take notice and want to collaborate with me on projects to share with my readers. Although brand collaborations are a lot of work in terms of organising shoots, writing, editing and then the emails back and forth, this is perhaps my favourite part of running Professional Babe (and the money is a very nice reward!).

I make money sharing for other people

Affiliate sales can be a hard slog, but there are various influencers and bloggers who make a very generous paycheck at the end of each month from these sales. I’m an affiliate for only one product and I make sure I wholeheartedly believe in it – that’s the key to success (don’t fall into the trap of flogging shit just to make money, it will bite you on your ass and your audience won’t trust you).

The products I used to buy are now sent as gifts

A very nice part of blogging is the gifts in the mail. I say no to a lot of press packages, but I’ve aligned myself with brands that I love and believe in. A nice reward is a little PR package in the mail! I’m finding I spend less money on items I would purchase before because now it’s being sent to me for free. Oh, and a free trip to Paris too!

So if you want to share your voice with the world and make some money doing it, why don’t you start a blog?

I’ve talked about how I think you should start a blog before. Maybe you have one or maybe you want to start, but I thought I’d let you know that my gal pal Alice Nicholls is running her course, Blog to Profit and intake closes in less than a week. If you want to take your Blog to Profit how I am, click here to see her course schedule and the amount of training you get. It is well worth the money (and I’m a B-school and premium coaching graduate!).

I’m a partner with Alice for Blog to Profit, so I make some money every time you sign up with my unique link.

While you learn the goods about how to transform your blog and make a profit (or even create one!), help you work with brands and collaborate with companies you could only dream of.

I’ll talk you through affiliate sales and how I’m making $1000 passive income per month this way.
