My quest to get a Ross Gellar white smile – white, bright & fabulous!
I’m addicted to strong black coffee. A coffee so strong it’s like a slap on the face followed by a nice little rub on your cheek after. It’s strong, it wakes you up but then it cuddles your insides and peps you up.
The downside of my addiction is the damage it’s had on my teeth. Teamed with the fact I’m pale, my stained teeth stand out and I’m self-conscious about it.
I wouldn’t often wear lipstick or even smile as I was worried about people noticing the colour further. I didn’t want to do anything that made my mouth stand out.
I’d used at home solutions prior which did work, but I knew I needed something more heavy duty to initially get the job done – I was after Ross Gellar white teeth. Remember that episode of friends where Ross smiled and his teeth glowed in the dark? I wanted that!
I’d even contemplated getting veneers to get the results I wanted, but the cost and time associated with it was a turn-off
After heading to my local dentist, Morrin Dental for my yearly checkup, I started chatting to my gorgeous dental hygienist, Kellie and I told her about how self-conscious I was of my smile.
Fast forward 2 months and I’m sitting here writing this with pearly whites and confidence to match. See!
Since putting up my before and after photos on Instagram I’ve been inundated with questions. I thought I’d do my best to answer the questions below and explain the process of how it all works.
How does the Philips Zoom whitening procedure work?
You’ll make two appointments, one to get your whitening tray made and the second is the actual procedure. I had my tray making appointment two weeks prior to my whitening treatment. Getting the tray made was slightly uncomfortable as I learned I have a relatively small mouth! The appointment lasts for about 15 minutes in total.
Your second appointment is when you get the whitening. I was told to allow around 3 hours as the procedure is done in stages to ensure I’m comfortable throughout. It started by having a super glamourous spacer placed in my mouth. Then my gums were covered to protect them and some vitamin E lip balm was applied. This was quite lengthy but I’m glad it was. When it’s anything cosmetic, it’s important there’s good attention to detail!
The whitening itself is completely in blocks of 15 minutes. They reapply a gel to reduce sensitivity between sessions and make sure you aren’t in too much pain. When you’ve finished your rounds, more gel is applied into your premade mouth guards and you wear that for the next 30 minutes.
Is it painful?
The first two blocks of 15 minutes are pretty painless for most people, but as you get the third one you can start to feel what’s called a zinger which is like slight nerve sensitivity in your teeth.
I ended up getting 3.5 rounds through but the nerve sensitivity was quite uncomfortable that I had to stop. I wouldn’t consider the procedure to be painful and when you experience these zingers, it’s intermittent so it catches you by surprise. I also loved how Kellie was present with the entire treatment. I knew if there were any issues, I could signal her so I wasn’t left in the room by myself.
I left my dentist at 3pm and by 9pm I was at home having a conversation with my girlfriend for the next hour. I slept okay too. But I wouldn’t book anything in after it if you can, leave the afternoon/evening to relax. I went to work and it probably wasn’t the best idea as the zingers do catch you and I was worried about letting out an F-bomb.
Can I see a proper before and after photo?
Where did you get it done?
I went to my local dentist Morrin Dental in Newcastle.
Why did you go there?
Morrin Dental has been my dentist since I was a kid! I knew I was in great hands as I’m super comfortable with the staff as the girls (and my dentist Mark!) are lovely! I also knew they had the Philips Zoom whitening which I’ve wanted for a while.
Can you eat after?
Leave it a couple of hours and you should be good. One thing to note, white food only. Nothing that can stain your teeth! I had a McDonald’s soft serve for dinner and it was incredible. You’ll need to eat whitish foods for the next 24-48 hours after the procedure. Your teeth can be a little sensitive, but my weren’t too bad if I had ice cream.
Is it expensive?
At Morrin Dental the procedure is $700.00 for the in chair treatment and your take home whitening. Until September 30th, they’re giving Professional Babe readers $100.00, so you can have a white smile for spring racing season! More on this at the bottom of the post!
Basically, if you cut out one coffee a day for 6 months, you can pay for the procedure and add money to the designer handbag fund – it’s worth it.
I know you guys are like me and you’re willing to invest in your appearance especially if it improves your confidence. This is another reason I don’t consider it expensive.
How long does it last for?
The first 48 hours after you will have that Ross Gellar smile! This will dull down over the next few days. I found my whiteness settled in a slightly patchy way, but you could only tell if you had your head very close to my teeth. Though, I didn’t freak out about this. My teeth now are evenly white.
Remember those trays you had made up? You’ll be sent home with some bleach so you can choose to whiten at home. The results are pretty permanent, but just remember red wine and coffee aren’t your teeth best friend and look after your teeth!
Can I just go to my dentist and get it done?
If they do Philips Zoom whitening yes. But keep in mind not all dentists do, which is why I went to Morrin Dental.
Why is Philips Zoom the best and how does it work?
I know Philips Zoom has been around for a long time. It has a great reputation and the fact my dentist uses it shows it’s a good product. The process works to lighten the discoloration of your tooth enamel and dentin. Tooth discoloration may result from drinking coffee and red wine – so all the good things in life!
The Zoom in-office tooth whitening procedure uses the Zoom Advanced Power Chairside Lamp to activate the 25 percent hydrogen peroxide whitening. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down the molecular bonds making up stains on and in your teeth. The intense light of the Zoom Whitening LED light shining on the whitening gel makes the process work even faster, improving whitening results by as much as 40%.
I want to book in, what can I do?
If you call and book at Morrin Dental before September 30th you can save $100.00 on your treatment of Zoom whitening. Call them up on (02) 4929 3077 and mention the ‘Professional Babe’ offer and the girls on the desk will know what you’re talking about!
