You don’t need to put illicit substances up your nose to feel like you’re on a cloud – essential oils can do exactly the same thing.

About four years ago I ended up super stressed over my business. I reacted to everything I was eating and was in a constant state of fight or flight.

I did what any sane millennial does – I shipped myself off to the most expensive health retreat in Australia with the little money that I had.

One thing that l really picked up from the retreat was the ability of media to trigger that fight or flight response which is why I don’t own a TV or rarely read the papers. When I want to know something, I’ll do my research (and Facebook, you know).

The reason I made this conscious decision was a talk they presented on the limbic system which is a part of our brain that governs all of our emotional responses – including a stress response.

When I started with dōTERRA again I wanted to understand how it all worked. I wanted to know the business side, the product side and absolutely everything to do with essential oils. I immersed myself in it and watched about 2-5 hours of training every single day for a month.

What really interested me wasn’t that you can make your own cleaning products or make your own skincare it was how powerful they were for our mood management by directly affecting our limbic system. It’s why they’re so beneficial for mood management.

Our sense of smell is our most primal sense. Did you know that? It’s why the smell of bourbon reminds us of the time we almost died in a gutter and causes us to churn in our belly and feel like we could hurl once again.

On the flipside the smell of apple pie might remind us of our nanna and we’re instantly transported back to all those happy times.

You can sniff your way to a better mood and it isn’t by cocaine – it’s dōTERRA! And not only is it MUCH better for your sinuses, it’s a whole lot better on your pocket too.

So when it comes to essential oils for mood management, where do we even start?

Below you’ll find a simplified guide of the three oils you’ll need in your toolkit if you’re after essential oils to manage your mood.

essential oils for anxiety1. Grounding blends

Anything from a wood, tree or root source is powerful at grounding. You know when you’re in the midst of an anxiety attack or feel like your heart is about to jump out of your chest? Or when you can’t sleep? This is when you need them.

Recommended blends: Balance, Frankincense, Peace, Peace Touch (roller blend, great for handbags), Cedarwood, Lavender Peace. 

2. Anything with peppermint:

Peppermint opens the airways and allows us to breathe deeply. When we breathe, we ALWAYS feel better because it’s so good at calming our nervous system and lowering our stress response. For some people it can be a stimulant, so in times of anxiety, I would opt for a grounding blend.

Recommended blends: Peppermint, EasyAir, Motivate, Motivate Touch (roller blend), AromaTouch, PastTense. 

essential oils for mood management 3. Uplifting blends:

The downside to anxiety is the absolute funk we get in post anxiety attack. Anything that is sprouty and grows high off the ground will be great for you. ANY CITRUS is going to be incredible.

Recommended blends: Lemon, Wild Orange, Motivate, Citrus Bliss, Elevation, Cheer, Bergamot. 

Diffusing is also your best way to do this and it’s a no brainer. As I say in my classes, if you can make a gin and tonic you can use doTERRA. As all you need to do is plug it in, select your oils and breathe. Simple, right?
