My Tips For Starting An Online Business Whilst Still Working Your Full-time Job

I’m going to let you in on a little secret – one day I’m going to make Professional Babe my full-time job.

It’s always been my plan to blog full-time so I can travel and work when inspiration strikes without being restricted to crazy set working hours. While I’m busy working on my day job, I’m also working on Professional Babe every day to make this happen.

Since my last post about how I got out of $22k worth of debt, I had numerous emails from you babes. You were scared and worried about taking the leap and the mountain of debt would accompany this big decision to pursue your dream.

Although we’d love to trust that the universe has our back, we still need to be smart about it.

Here are my tips on starting an online business while you’re still busting your nut in your primary job.

Keep it as a passion project

I’ve heard of horror stories of people who leave their stable income to pursue their hobby full-time. Initially, it goes well for them, until they put so much pressure on it to make their business work. They’re squeezing it so tightly and their hobby becomes a chore, rather than something they did for fun.

By keeping it as a passion project initially, there’s no real pressure to make it work. You can work on it with joy and allow yourself to be creative without the stress of needing it to succeed.

Dedicate time each day for it

If you want to take it full-time then you need to devote time each day. If your goal is building a successful blog then jot ideas down every day, send emails or work on your products or offerings.

Even if it’s 20 minutes each day, at the end of the year you would have spent 7,300 minutes or 121 hours (gee I hope this maths is right!) on developing your passion and turning it into a business.

Create a vision for its future

When I started Professional Babe, I had a clear vision for its future. I saw exactly where I wanted to take it, the person I’d need to become to get there and what I’d have to do. This prevented me from running around in circles as every decision I made I would ask myself, “Is this taking me closer or further from my vision?”.

Plan when you start

When you have a vision, it’s easy to create a plan for your future. If you have a big goal in mind, whether it’s a product creation or even the goal to leave your job and do this full-time, then you need to have a plan in place.

It could be as simple as working out what you need to do each week or month, or the amount of sales you need and what you have to do to get there, but have something in place so you can stick to it.

Have a mentor

The best advice I’ve ever been given is to mirror people who have achieved what you want. They’ve already paved the way and worked out what works and what doesn’t so mirror them. Maybe they blogged 5 days initially or they got an internship in fashion which helped them get where they are today.

My mentor for online business is a friend of mine who makes $20,000 a month all from her blog. I enrolled in her life changing program and I can’t wait until I can also say I make that much from my blog.

Surround yourself with the right people

When I first started Professional Babe, I had an influx of people telling me it was oversaturated market and it couldn’t possibly work. I had so much negativity thrown at me that it began to dim that voice in my head that told me that I could do it.

When you start out, surround yourself with people who get you and your vision and people who want to see you do well. This could be a course or a mastermind group filled with people who are also working on their side businesses too.
